What We Do
KeepAmericaFishing™ is leading the fight to preserve your right to sustainably fish on our nation’s waterways. As the voice of the American angler, KeepAmericaFishing works to keep our public resources – our oceans, lakes, rivers and streams – open, clean and abundant with fish.
Across the country, preventing or limiting recreational anglers’ access to public waters and fisheries is being touted as a new way to manage fish populations. This unprecedented shift undermines the achievements of proven fisheries management methods that focus on conservation and promote sustainable fishing. As a result, the past 10 years have seen a dramatic increase in bans on recreational fishing from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Texas to Minnesota.
In an effort to combat access restrictions around the country, the American Sportfishing Association launched KeepAmericaFishing to unite the nation’s 60 million anglers under one voice. Through policy, science and conservation, KeepAmericaFishing works to minimize access restrictions, promote clean waters and restore fish populations. With its conservation partners, KeepAmericaFishing works to limit and provide for review and revision science-based closures to areas in which they are clearly beneficial to the health of the fishery.
To accomplish our mission on behalf of fisheries and anglers, Keep America Fishing works with a variety of decision makers in the following agencies: Council for Environmental Quality, Department of Commerce/NOAA, All State Departments of Fish and Game or Wildlife, Department of Justice, Department of the Interior, Environmental Protection Agency, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, National Park Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service.
At KeepAmericaFishing, we are working to give voice to the millions of American recreational anglers who share one thing in common – a passion for fishing.

Professional anglers from across the nation gathered at the International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades, better known as ICAST, to show their support for KeepAmericaFishing™. ICAST attendees had the opportunity to meet the anglers, hear firsthand what fishing means to them and how supporting KeepAmericaFishing helps ensure our nation’s waters remain open, clean and abundant with fish.
In addition to the meet and greet, these sportfishing legends made the commitment to serve as KeepAmericaFishing Ambassadors, spreading the word about the importance of uniting all anglers, from novice to professional, with one voice in support of fisheries conservation and keeping our public waters open to recreational fishing.

- Q:What is the KeepAmericaFishing™?
The American Sportfishing Association (ASA) – www.ASAfishing.org – is the parent organization for KeepAmericaFishing™. Since its founding in 1933, ASA has represented the interests of the entire sportfishing community to help ensure that we have clean water, abundant fish and plenty of places to go fishing. In July 2010, ASA launched KeepAmericaFishing as a way for anglers to get involved in advocating for their sport. The website – www.KeepAmericaFishing.org – is the vehicle through which anglers can engage in advocacy, sign up to receive news and alerts and show their support by contributing to the campaign.
To ensure the future of our sport, we need to be represented at every table where decisions are made about the future of recreational fishing. And that takes time, people and funding. ASA’s members and staff are passionate about maintaining healthy fisheries and your right to sustainably fish on our nation’s public waterways.
- Q:Why should I support KeepAmericaFishing?
There are people who want to stop you from fishing. Across the country, preventing or limiting recreational anglers’ access to public waters is being touted as a new way to manage fish populations. This unprecedented shift undermines the achievements of proven fisheries management methods that focus on conservation and promote sustainable fishing. Through policy, science and conservation, KeepAmericaFishing is working to minimize access restrictions, promote clean waters and restore fish populations.
- Q:I currently belong to other fishing organizations. How does KeepAmericaFishing differ from those?
KeepAmericaFishing is the ONLY organization that represents the voice of all 60 million anglers in this country – no matter where you fish or what you catch. We believe creating a collective voice for recreational anglers will allow us to be a force to be reckoned with. United under one voice, we will have the legislative muscle to keep our waters open and abundant with fish.
- Q:How does KeepAmericaFishing compare to other outdoor organizations?
Like other outdoor organizations we advocate to protect your rights as a citizen of this country. Our oceans, lakes, rivers and streams are natural resources that are legislatively protected for the right and enjoyment of all citizens. Just as the NRA protects the hunter’s right to bear arms, KeepAmericaFishing protects your right to fish on our nation’s public waters.
- Q:How can I support KeepAmericaFishing in my community?

You can also sign our Angler’s Bill of Rights and the Ethical Angler Pledge to ensure that we are all making a commitment to keep our waters open, clean and abundant with fish.
- Q:How does KeepAmericaFishing decide when to take action on legislative policies affecting recreational fishing?
No matter where you live, KeepAmericaFishing is working hard to ensure your favorite place to spend time on the water remains open, clean and abundant with fish. We focus our efforts on what is in the best interest of the greatest number of anglers and do all that we can to ensure that the future of recreational fishing is protected. These efforts are overseen by the American Sportfishing Association’s Advocacy Committee and the association’s Board of Directors who represent the sportfishing community.

- Q:Prior to July 1, 2013 membership was free. What happens to existing KeepAmericaFishing 'members' and can people still join for free?
We value everyone who supports KeepAmericaFishing. This is simply a new way of communicating with them. Individuals who wish to join for free can still do so as KeepAmericaFishing Advocates. They will receive alerts, offers and newsletters. Those who wish to have a deeper engagement with KeepAmericaFishing and to proudly carry a membership card can join for just $20.
To accommodate those individuals who had given recently before the new membership launch, if you donated $20 or more from February 1, 2013 to July 1, 2013, you are already considered a paying member and will receive a renewal based on your donation date.
- Q:I just joined as a member, when will my welcome packet arrive?
For our initial membership launch the first round of welcome packets will be mailed in mid-August and will likely arrive in late August 2013. After that we will fulfill welcome packets monthly unless otherwise notified. Please allow 30-45 days after August 2013 for your packet to arrive.
- Q:Why should I join KeepAmericaFishing as a member versus an advocate?
Our members provide steady support for our cause both financially and through action. Members tend to be more active on policy issues impacting our sport and more likely to pick up the phone and call their Representatives. This level of commitment is essential to our work. In addition, members receive deeper discounts on many of our special offers and special communications. Our advocates are equally important so if you cannot give $20 to join as a member and still wish to take action on policy issues please join in whatever capacity you can. You can learn more about being an advocate versus a member here.
- Q:I donated money in exchange for a premium item. What are your policies on these?
Premiums are a standard way of thanking donors for a donation. We typically run several premium-with-donation promotions in a given year. However, fulfilling premium gifts can be staff intensive and often depends on the generosity of our partners. Because of that we often have offer details that clearly outline any restrictions on a special promotion that you can find at the bottom of the donation form and, in most cases, at the bottom of the promotional email.
As a general rule, if you do not report a premium not received, received in poor condition, or difficulty with a premium item within 6 months of your donation we cannot replace or fulfill that item. Again, this varies by promotion and may be shorter based on the offer details of that promotion.
If you have questions about a premium item please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
