Gillnets – Florida

2000px-Florida-StateSeal.svg_-298x300In 1994, Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment by 72% to ban gillnets in state waters. The amendment has been credited with bringing about a powerful recovery in red drum, speckled trout, snook, and other species that provide the foundation for a $8.7 billion recreational industry.

The ban has been challenged by gillnetters who claimed it to be unconstitutional, but the Supreme Court of Florida has denied their petitions and upheld the ban.
